Indisciplines by Rose Vidal – Hugo Vitrani
As the new season of Mélange des Genres approaches, CRAVAN introduces a new conversation series of conversations dedicated to Indisciplines, hosted by Rose Vidal.
An artist, writer and art critic, Rose Vidal studied literature before graduating from the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Paris. Her multidisciplinary practice sits at the intersection of writing, visual arts, performance and design. Her debut novel, Drama Doll (Gallimard), extends an ongoing exploration of pain as an aesthetic, political and social construct. Recipient of the 2026 Villa Albertine residency, she is set to travel through Chicago, New York and San Francisco to further her research into the opioid crisis and contemporary forms of care through the lens of art.
By discipline, we mean the field of practice to which an artist’s, writer’s, designer’s or maker’s work belongs, and the personal commitment required to give that practice a place in one’s life. It is about turning creative gestures into a profession, sustaining them over time, and allowing them to evolve and flourish.
Yet to explore, learn, master and inhabit one’s practice also means, inevitable, stepping beyond it : combining it with others, leaving it behind in order to return to it differently, or distilling it into new forms. It means being willing to break with one’s discipline for the sake of one’s discipline. To embrace indiscipline is to open up new possibilities within one’s gestures, one’s craft and one’s practice, allowing them to move elsewhere and become something new.
The Indisciplines encompass everything that exists on the fringes of a discipline : its margins, its side paths and its elsewhere. Indisciplines is a series of conversations with figures from the fields of art, design, craft and thought, inviting them to tell their stories through the prism of what exists alongside their practice, beyond its conventional boundaries.
This first conversation marks the beginning of a series that will continue throughout the autumn. Following her Villa Albertine residency in the United States, Rose Vidal will return to CRAVAN for a second conversation next November.

Hugo Vitrani, curator at the Palais de Tokyo, shares his experience working with artists and exhibitions around the accursed share : that which escapes utilitarian and prewritten logics, exceeding and transgressing established boundaries. Graffiti, unsanctioned exhibitions, institutional piracy and the subversion of procedures : moments when being an artist becomes illegal.
